Here's a great article from Care2. The article focuses on Phthalates, called “plasticizers,”. Among other things, it is used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes for plumbing. Like everything else dealing with autism, it is controversial, with strong advocates on both sides. But as parents, siblings, or those caring for people afflicted with autism, we know the causes. We don't need a microscope and a 10 year study to tell us. The bigger question should be how do we avoid Phthalates, or keep them at arms length so not affect our health when it's becomes completely molded into the very fabric of our lives. That probably won't be answered in our lifetime.
